The Organizer-In-Training fellowship program will equip fellows with the tools they need to transform from feeling lost, confused, and angry, to being able to channel that into meaningful and impactful campaigns and initiatives to engage, and mobilize your communities, families, congregations, and neighbors around the things you care about most. This program is particularly aimed at Generation Z and Millennial teenagers and young adults who feel as though the elders in their lives, in organizing spaces, and in government are not making an effort to share the wealth of knowledge that allows them power and influence over young folks. We do not gatekeep the tools to change the world. This fellowship will be open to every person who wants to apply and aims to accept every single person who applies and wants to change the world to be a better, more equitable, community-based place. This is a cohort-based fellowship and all fellows will follow along to hopefully build meaningful relationships with their cohort members. The time commitment will be 5 hours or less per week so that we may accept every person possible and be flexible in the way we move through the curriculum.
Through the Organizer-In-Training Fellowship, the future organizers will not only be able to successfully cut an issue and organize people and money around it, but also will have formed strong networks with their other cohort members. We are certain that these relationships will not only be useful in connecting with other organizations and building greater power but also be impactful in building a strong sense of community. The Organizer-In-Training Fellowship will teach or reinforce important organizer tools like:
Identifying self-interest
The 1:1
Loving agitation
Mutual Aid versus "Systemic Change"
Compromise and Negotiation (Melian Dialogue)
Calendering and Who Cares for You?
Public versus Private Life (Building a powerful public life)
Power mapping and Power analysis
Building Teams, Task Forces, and Coalitions
Public Actions
Propositions
Organizing Money
Public and Organizational Meetings
Cutting an Issue
The fellowship will require the use of Zoom and the ability to understand documents from the Google Suite (slides, forms, and docs). We commit to making the fellowship accessible to every person who is accepted as a fellow. If you have accessibility needs and would like to be a cohort member, please fill out our initial interest survey above or email us at fellowship@detmutualaid.com
While we focus on making this fellowship accessible to all, we want to discourage white supremacists, homophobes, xenophobes, racists, ableists, etc. Because we all live and were socialized in a capitalist white supremacist society, we are all capable of doing harm to those we fight alongside and for but we will not tolerate purposefully organizing against our siblings. We will be utilizing the honor system because we trust you but we will allow those you have harmed to determine your punishment as necessary if something arises
*We are here* February 2023: Initial Interest Survey published.
The initial interest survey at the top of this page will be utilized to finalize our organizer curriculum and make accessibility accommodations necessary to make sure that anyone and everyone who would like to participate in the fellowship can participate.
March 2023: First quarter curriculum finalized based on feedback given in survey.
The 1st quarter curriculum will be finalized by the end of March. Because this is our pilot year, we will continue the completion of curriculum based on the pacing that our fellows feel is appropriate for them. We will have a check in after the first quarter to analyze whether or not what we are doing is working and adjust as needed.
April 2023-March 2023: Finalize fundraising to rightfully compensate organizer-in-training fellow
The Metro Detroit Mutual Aid believes in compensating people for their work. Thus, we are slating the inaugural class of The Organizer-In-Training Fellowship for Fall 2022 and will seek to compensate all fellows a reasonable stipend. As the nature of individual organization fundraising is tumultuous, if we do not come up with the monies to stipend all fellows, there will likely be a principled and holistic review of all interested fellows. If you are interested in being an individual donor, you can find our interest form here.
April 2023: Application Opens and applicants are interviewed on a rolling basis
The application will open mid-April 2021. At that time, we will begin holding short video or phone group interviews for cohort placement. This is not an interview for acceptance or rejection.
June 2023: First batch of applicants notified of acceptance and assigned cohort
July 2023: Second batch of applicants notified of acceptance and assigned cohort
The topics are organized to take two weeks to discuss. The topic, pre-meeting objectives, and readings will be posted on this landing page. This is typically a few articles and some things to think about. In the days prior to our first live conversation, you may review these materials. The first session taking place on the 1st of the two week period will be 90 minutes long with breaks. We will have a review of the 1st half materials and a discussion within the smaller cohort groups. In the second session of the two-week period, we will review the 2nd half of the materials and focus on answering the questions meant to get us all thinking about where we fit inside of our own power. Post-session assignments will also be posted on this landing page immediately after the 2nd session. Then, for the second two weeks of the month, do it all again!
For example:
The topic for the next two weeks is calendering. You go to the website (the one you are reading right now) on January 3rd, 2021, and scroll down to outlines, lessons, and assignments. You see the topic is calendering and that there are 3 readings, 2 questions, and a bunch of objectives.
We have our first live session on January 6th, 2021 at 5:30 pm and you have a great discussion with your cohort members. You thought you knew how to schedule your time on a calendar, but you have some different ideas now. You get around to the 3rd reading and are excited to continue talking about calendering.
We have our second live session on January 13th, 2021 at 5:30 pm. You have another great discussion and have a great grasp on the concept of calendering. After the session, you come back to the fellowship landing page and see the section on calendering has been updated with the homework. You complete it over the weekend.
The topic for the next two weeks is 1:1s. You go to the website on January 17th, 2021 and start the process all over again!
Anyone and everyone can apply to the Organizer-In-Training fellowship program. We are prioritizing allowing every person who does not pose a threat to others to be a fellow in the program. We believe that being a "competitive" program is rooted in a lot of the things we work against- capitalism, ableism, and classism. No one is better than anyone else and we want to ensure that everyone has access to the same tools.
We hope to release the application by April of 2023. Once the applications are in review, we will be doing group interviews on a rolling basis to best figure out well-rounded cohort groups. This is very very important as fellows will be spending a lot of time together being vulnerable and connecting on a deeper level. We will have formal acceptances, cohort information, and details on how to access the first meeting sent via email by September 2023.
After the completion of the Organizer-In-Training fellowship, you may approach any presenter or cohort member for an recommendation. It is up to them to determine whether or not you stood out enough or they have enough information for them to write a meaningful letter recommendation. Every person who completes the Organizer-In-Training fellowship can receive a reference for any position describing the program and your role in it. We want to see you succeed!
There are several ways to support the Organizer-In-Training fellowship:
Invest in us! We will need to purchase several items of software including a Pro Zoom subscription to accommodate the length of time and amount of people we anticipate, a Calendly Pro subscription for every one of our fellows, and a mail chimp subscription. Most importantly we are prioritizing compensating fellows. If you are interested in supporting this, email Executive Director Myaia Holmes at director@detmutualaid.com
Train with us! We are welcoming all productive disruptions to our regularly-scheduled curriculum. If you have a presentation on something relevant to organizing or community we would love to have you! Please email us at fellowship@detmutualaid.com
Partner with us! We would love for you to advertise the fellowship with your networks, staff, family, and friends. We would also love for you to contribute some of your organizers' or Executive Director's time to help shape our programming or present on a current project or action that you are working on. If you are interested in any of these things or some of our graphics for your organizational or personal social media, please email us at fellowship@detmutualaid.com
Host us! We are very very interested in having cohorts intern with your organization! This can mean sitting in on meetings, helping call folks to get them out to your car caravan, or having your staff introduce themselves to them. It would mean the absolute world to us. If your organization is a good fit for a temporary internship of one or more, please email Director of Program Development Shaney Whitfield at shaney@detmutualaid.com
